Weekend Morning Forever

[Coffee: simplyphoto.blogspot | David Shrigley | Comfy | Eternal Sunshine | Kurt Cobain: Last Days]

I hope you had a good Christmas! Mine was a relatively quiet family affair..we mixed things up a bit by having roasted root vegetables and mango sherbet. I'm excited about my gifts: gold plated headphones, tea accessories, graphic novels to name a few. Post Christmas I have this feeling of sedation caused by copious amounts of tea and coffee consumption, movie watching (Inception was the bomb), and sleeping till noon. Although the threat of actual school work is constantly looming in the back of my mind, I am fully aware that at some point I will have to face my guilt and get shtuff done. Till then, I'm going to blog about the reading I have time to do :)

Reading materials I plan to/have read this Winter Break:

Wow. After assembling this visual representation of my reading list, I've realized my choices are like a 3rd wave feminist how-to manual...but hey there's nothing wrong with that. I've read How Sassy Changed My Life and was super inspired- Sassy sounds like the sweetest magazine ever, but seeing as it folded more than 10 years ago, I'll just have to settle for Bust magazine, which was mentioned by Marisa Meltzer in How Sassy.... I've started Girl Power but unfortunately I think it's due  at the library very soon so I don't know if I'll be able to finish it. It's pretty good so far- it's not all about riot grrrl, but just about women's involvement in music. Finally, the tom of a graphic novel Locas is something I've been anticipating reading for a while, ever since I saw it in a book listing "most inflential graphic novels." I already feel more smarter!

Quasi Christmas

I'm just about ready for Christmas. I've made most of my gifts, made* (too many) cookies, drunk liters and liters of tea, and watched not a single Christmas movie. It hasn't been a "traditional" holiday season, but I've had a lot of fun. I thought I'd share this (sorta) Christmas playlist...meaning it has holiday references but not all positive and not all blatantly mentioned and beat over the head. Songs by Fleet Foxes, Jens Lekman, Sigur Ros, and PJ Harvey sound like Christmas music in that they are delicately dramatic ...they remind me of a winter landscape. Blink-182, Bob Rivers etc.. add a more facetious side to the playlist; lamenting all the Christmas cheer that they're not so much feeling. Anyhow, it has an interesting mix of stuff, meaning it may not be the ideal thing to play at your family get together on Christmas morning. Contrarily, Fleet Foxes, Jens Lekman etc. (see before) would actually be a refreshing break for your ears on Christmasif you're sick of all the "riding along with the song of a winter-y fairy land" bs.

Merry Christmas!

*Oh, and let's not forget the Eggnog pancakes I'm making tomorrow morning! Thanks again Joy the Baker :)

Teenage

I rescued a couple discarded Blink-182* cds at the beginning of the month from Value Village..Take Off Your Pants and Jacket and The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show and have been listening to them nonstop. I was totally convinced that portable CD Walkmans were the way to go..until I was jamming out while walking home and the disk started to skip more than me!! (check out that figurative language yallzz). Don't fret, that's when my faith in the iPod was rekindled..my new Blink albums are now safely stored on iTunes.

The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show is a live album that incorporates pretty good live recordings with hilariously vulgar, crude, obscene teenage boy humor. Blink's in between song banter is so great...I was mildly offended when I first listened to it but then was throughly desensitized after the first couple songs that their profanities became terms of endearment. This cd filled me to the brim with gratitude for being a teenager; unapologetic sense of self and saying whatever you want.

Freaks n Geeks, Dazed and Confused, The Strokes, Paranoid Park...makes me wanna be forevaa young!

*I'm so not ashamed of early 2000 culture! This goes to show what you can find @ thrift stores that others don't want but you're over the moon about.

Courtney

I have a lot of homework to do. I also am not able to miss hour-long Behind The Music specials on Courtney Love. Yeah my priorities may be slightly skewed, but everything gets done so I don't beat myself up about it. Truth be told, teenagers are lazy- if you wanna fight it, fine, we'll talk, but I have overwhelming mental statistics showing that we just are. It's all a matter of knowing when to force yourself to do stuff and I believe that time is now ;( (does anyone else find the semi-colon, open bracket smiley extremely off-putting? I really like it)

Wish me luck on summatives! Yay!

[Various Tumblr sources..I'm sorry I lost track]

Tie Dye Tights!

[Photo of Agnete Hegelund from Hanneli]

BUST magazine DIY!

I plan on making these in the near future. I've started sewing a dress that involves cornflower blue fabric and LOTS of pleats..I just envision these tights going so well with it! I'll post pictures when I've gotten more done but it's promising so far (for those of you who are interested in how to pleat a skirt, let me know!).

Oh, and when you dye the tights, make sure to use high % cotton ones- nylons will literally repel the dye and will leak all over your clothes.

Monsters

My monster series: zombie, witch,  vampire, ghost. It was taken around Halloween, but I'm still into it even after. I like having Halloween themes all year round; it's never too late. Lately I really like Dia de los Muertos themed stuff..I have like this mexican skull banner hanging in my room.

Please listen to "Frost" by SALEM.

Wow this post was super insightful..good thing most of you don't even read the post, just look at the pictures. If you do, well then thank you.

Censorship

Seriously? It has come to this?

Why does the school board think that by blocking every website that it'll make us use the computers for school work? Pshh. Nice try guys. You don't block twitter, which is single handedly destroying the English language, but you block Tumblr (which was really helpful in art class..) THEN you cut off my blog. Not impressed.

Blocking other websites will still never make me go to http://www.statcan.gc.ca/ Sorry.

Vids

Soothe your soul with some sensual seduction from Snoop doggy dog. That's all.

... I need to include at least 250 characters in eer' post I do, otherwise I immediately sell out and might as well be using tumblr (no offense). I've been hearing some great music lately like I said before, but it's been taken to the next level by some pretty awesome music vids. I feel like, within the 4 I've chosen, they progressively get weirder and more freaky-in-a-good-way.

1. The xx- VCR: sweet minimalist video- note: the kids in the vid are not  The xx. | 2. The Knife- Heartbeats : I really like both of Karen Anderson's groups (other one is Fever Ray). This song is super catchy.

3. Snoop Dogg- Sensual Seduction: I like his use of the retro auto-tune very much. | 4. Wavves- Post Acid: This is the best music video, not ever, just really good. The Wavves boys possess supreme acting abilities.

41 days till Christmas y'all.

**NOTE** playing all videos at once is totally nuts. Thanks Cara.

Lucky Shirt?

[Wear it hanging from a doorframe, wear in a park in Toronto..]

It's like in the Grudge when Sarah Michelle Gellar is looking through the pictures and realizing, to her horror, that the creepy zombie girl is in the background of every family photo..except this time it's we wearing THAT Nirvana shirt. It's like I subconsciously predict when I'm going to have my picture taken so that I can wear my most favorite t-shirt evaar! It's soft and oversized and perfectly worn in..plus it has Nirvana's purgatory design on it. Lotsa fun times in THAT Nirvana shirt. But seriously, that's not the only shirt I own, it's just that I'm wearing it in every single picture. Just sayin'.

[Wear it under a play structure, wear it while dying Gabby's hair with Kool-Aid..so verstile!]

To emphasize my love for that shirt, I'll throw in a Harry Potter reference (I just bought tickets!!) : If I were Voldemort and had to choose just one Horcrux, it would be fo sho' that shirt.
PS- Aren't you guys excited to see the dramz unfold between Ron & Harry?

Vinyl

Vinyl I've been listening to:

  • Wavves- King of the Beach
  • Jonsi- Go
  • MGMT- Congratulations
  • Sugarcubes- Birthday single

For me, music is the ultimate source of inspiration- not fashion editorials nor condescending words of wisdom..that said, I have a few cool photos that I love I've been saving for nothing in particular, but there's no time like the present:

Surrounding ones' self with album artwork is most inspiring.

Rocky horror-esque lips are sweet. Guess what?! I'm not a Rocky Horror virgin anymore..

This guy is awesome. I would credit him if I could remember what this is from.

The colors in these photos are weirdly similar..I wanna blend them all together and form an insanely cool house.

    Happy November!

Grade 12 is hard. I hate staying up late and waking up when it's still dark. Too many rough drafts to revise, too many universities..but most importantly is NO BLOG TIME. Here is a little inspiration collage dedicated to my dearest school. Yay!

I have been working very hard on a zine for this girl's Rock Camp that is finally finished so that will be up if anyone is interested. It's basically a little inspiration book for girls who want to start up their own rock band.

I'm psyched about dressing up for Halloween for school tomorrow!

    Paris 2.0

I think that the food in Paris deserves a post all to itself.

Cafe Expres (aka Espresso shots), Nutella Banana Crepes,  Rhubarbe Yaourt, and giant paninis...

It was really bizarre to go from this to London restaurant food (we took the Chunnel to London after Paris), which is basically pub food, which is basically fish and chips. Okay I'm exaggerating, but nothing could compare to walking around and wherever you go there's somewhere amazing to eat. A more extreme cultural shock was coming back home to Canada and eating peanut butter and jam sandwiches for lunch...boo hoo real life.

THE BUTTONS ARE FINALLY CLICKABLE!! Much time invensted in Photoshop and figuring out tedious html has paid off..I'm so excited!

    Fashion!

I know it's crazy and unheard of, but I get inspired by runway when it is in its appropriate season. I do find that sometimes collections can translate into either season, like Chloe, which is just the same every season (yes, people notice Hannah McGibbon). Or Sonia Rykiel, which is constantly bringing out knitwear that works for either hot or cold. What with all this spring 2011 nonsense (I'm actually only partly serious, I can't wait to see Miu Miu), looking for applicable fall 2010 inspiration can be difficult with all this distraction.

Going to Europe made me reconsider my fashion beliefs- living out of a suitcase filled with only things that go together, make you feel good and are comfy was a realization that a good base wardrobe is vital. The shopping done during the trip was also a realization that I do not necessarily like the $500+ clothing from a certain brand or whatever, it's the ideas that I'm into. Finding ways to incorporate creative, "trendy" (hate that word, don't judge), interesting ideas from designers into a base wardrobe is basically the perfect plan.

Grey layers seen @ Marc Jacobs remind me of Courtney Love with the shoes and all. I like that it's all grey but still has texture and current shapes. | I think the whole slouchy thing has always been an inspiration for me. I'm actually kinda glad it's fall because now I can emulate Rag & Bone without getting heatstroke! | Proenza Schouler is sooo consistantly young and filled with fresh ideas. I'm happy about the new goth take on the babydoll dress. The whole casual with something dressy look is soo perfect here with a sweatshirt + skirt @ Dries Van Noten. Finally, my new favourite Paul & Joe (the boutique in London is really nice- it's a Parisian brand though...n e ways) has this prim dress that is a great interpretation of the "school uniform" thing going on now.

    Paris

PARIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL! (allow me to gush even more:) Last week was one of the best of my life- I have never felt so physically and mentally well ever. Everywhere I looked there was something new and even more beautiful. The weather was perfect, meaning I wouldn't have wanted it any cooler or hotter, meaning we ate outside for every single meal. I am in love with those cafes that are seen EVERYWHERE in Paris that have seats set up outside, facing the street, to allow prime people watching digs. My love of coffee has tripled and I have become obsessed with 'les cafes expres' which are basically espresso shots (SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS). Le "joie de vivre" that Parisians breathe was what kept me walking every day, even when my arches were screaming "go back to the hotel!!" we managed to see so much of Paris in only 3 days. Having never been, 3 days was all it took for me to become a Francophile, and makes me want to come back asap.

    Laduree truck!

    Au Revoir Simone "Sad Song"

    Louvre

    MORE TO COME!

PS- the message in the Au Revoir Simone song has nothing to do with me. The Au Revoir Simone girls just remind me of all the fashionable french girls I encountered whilst in Paris. Plus I just heard of this band on my trip, so it brings it aaall back.

    Fuzzy

Now that I've been back at school for a while, it is now appropriate to have a sweater post. Some people are shoe people, others are drawn to dresses, but I have this serious obsession with sweaters. While shopping I try to go into stores with an open mind and find things that are missing from my wardrobe, such as a simple skirt or some black pants. No matter how focused I am, I always manage to come out with a sweater in hand- it's like this magnetic pull or something! In the summer, (even though I LOVE the weather), I secrety pine for perfect weather fall days where I can keep my cozy sweater on all day. This fall, I'm hoping to find a big beige fuzzy knit that gives off an angelic glow in the autumn sun. There's just something about fall which can only be described with "cozy" that makes me miss summer a little less.

    I'm Ready

So with a final heat wave, I think I might finally be ready to accept the fact that fall WILL come at some point. I can at least say that I'm reluctantly excited about fall fashion..and pumpkin flavored things. I've made a little collage of what I'm feeling for fall with what little free time I have at the moment. I've also included some of my fave songs of now. I like keeping musical diaries so that listening to certain songs later on will bring back all the memories associated with it. That's all.
