Here we goooo\\"Riverside Kids"- The Young Friends

Sporty meets Posh meets Baby Spice style inspiration..you might understand more what I'm trying to say in my elaboration at the bottom.

+ here's The Young Friends w a cheery weekend feel good song. My default weekend song is Mariah Carey's 2005 classic party track It's Like That (feat. Jermaine Dupri and Fatman Scoop) but I decided to feature something a bit more fresh. HEREWEGONOWWHAT!

[Old-school Nike sneakers (Frida Salomonsson), loose black on black (makes me think of trackies), Bjork's crazy braids, cutesy borderline precious dresses: slightly granny (Charles Anastase) and 70s school girl minis(retrospace)]

nu emo pt. 2

My obsession continues! Marilyn Manson dissing My Chemical Romance in NME's list of 'the most vicious put-downs in music EVER' provoked me to reassess once again what emo really means. Putting aside all idealogies of emo that involve barfy neon accents, the skinny jeans + skate shoes combo, and the pierced low angle selfie pout, we can move into a new era where describing things as being "emo" could be positive.

The first step in remedying this scene/emo confusion (see "scene" def.) is revealing the roots of emo music and pinpointing when exactly the "emo" genre changed its image completely. Originating in the 80s, "emotional" alternative music with confessional lyrics could be exemplified by independant bands such as Rites of Spring and even the Smiths. In the 90s, introverted alternative bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and even Nirvana helped to define the sound that this emo subculture stood for.

The Hipster Handbook also brought up this idea that what you wear is a direct reflection of what you listen to. According to this book, "many hipsters shape their wardrobe, and often their personalities, to match the music they like." Keeping in mind that it's not only hipsters who shape their appearance on what music they listen to, we can concur that defining an emo look really depends on whether said emo listens to the appropriate music.

[Emo re-imagined: Androgynous clothes, limited colour (think grayscale), deep side part/hair obscuring face, spikes, thug toques, vans, cats]

Curtis Mayfield + AIR + David Cross

Winterr bluuues Yeah, I get it..here are some albums that will make you feel ok. Or better! I'm also now realizing that these are the ideal albums to play should you ever find yourself home alone. I say this because when I listen to them I feel as if I'm among friends ;)

Curtis Mayfield- Superfly

Walk down the street feeling fine to Curtis Mayfield. One of my favourite things about Superbad was the funky 70s R&B soundtrack. I'll say it makes mornings bearable, even if you're up and at 'em before the sun cares to be.

♪Superfly!♪
Air- Moon Safari

Hipster Handbook approved "French Disco" that provides a neat life soundtrack.  Good for times where you know you should be working but can't because it's creepy quiet. This will fill your home with happiness and summer light.

Kelly Watch the Stars
D. Cross- Shut Up You Baby

Trust D.Cross to inspire you to be a better person in general...like him. I learnt so much from this dude..see my New Years' resolutions. BUT just know that I hope that you know swearing's bad.

Mark Rothko\\Quickness and stillness

"...art to me is an anecdote of the spirit, and the only means of making concrete the purpose of its varied quickness and stillness."

Mark Rothko, No. 8, 1949

Friday the 13th

Best of luck today. If it's any consolation, I doubt anything could make your day as bad as any one of these scary movies. Just don't answer the phone, or take any jobs at haunted establishments. Cool.

7 thangs David Cross can teach us for 2012

Let's look to comedian David Cross for some kind-of-new years resolutions. I've extrapolated from his wise words some tips to help me live my live from now on. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. THINK about it.

  1. Don't pigeonhole yourself by saying you're that kind of person or let certain things you believe in overwhelm your whole personality.
"I hate bumper stickers, you can't sum anything up. All you do is paint yourself in some caricaturist corner."
  2. Record your ideas before you forget them. Or better yet just freewrite and then sort out what you're actually into later. Writers block doesn't exist.
"I'll think of the idea and then I'll write something down, then within that there will be a joke or two which is the original thing which I thought was funny."
  3. Stop trying so damn hard. Do what you're into and who cares if anyone else is. Desparation is never funny.
"It's not about trying to be funny all the time. It's more of a document that hopefully is funny."
  4. Try reading the bible if you already haven't. It's probably the most referenced piece of writing in our culture today. Plus it's apparently a good read..
"The Bible is the funniest book I have ever read. It's so funny! Right in the first six pages, it's funny!"
  5. Know what's up in the world. Read the telegraph uk site or n + 1
"Occasionally I'll watch Fox News for as long as I can tolerate it, or CNN. I'll watch until I get nfuriated, but you got to know what they're talking about and what they're not talking about."
  6. Give up on depressing reality shows...or television in general. If you're feeling uncreative, I can give you one good reason why that might be (hint: it was what I casually mentioned before). I'm always down to watch tv online though- you can choose when you want to watch it, what exactly you want to watch, AND no commercials. Win win.
"(on the Simple Life) Just vile people; awful human beings. Who get away with anything, because they're rich. I, right then, vowed that I would retain this image everytime I hear George Bush say 'the terrorists hate our freedom.' You know what? I hate our freedom. Little ol' me, an American! I hate it! That's all we've done with it? We...are...awful.
  7. Finally, if you're ever feeling bad, put some D. Cross on your iPod and go for a walk. You'll feel a ton better. Happy New Year!
