the blue hour\\The Future + Coldplay "Yellow"

The blue hour is the period of time when it is neither dark nor light during either sunset or sunrise. This time is considered special because of the quality of light at this time of day.

I watched the movie The Future by Miranda July last night and noticed an abundance of scenes featuring the blue hour. Dusk during sunrise made me think of Coldplay's video for Yellow, which demonstrates perfectly the changes in light during the sunrise. The middle of the video is when it's specifically the blue hour...it's so beautiful with the stars still in the darker sky that's higher up. Although I'm not into Coldplay as much as I was in grades 7&8, Yellow is still one of my favorite music videos ever. Chis Martin looks so earnest!

high school timeline\\ Hole "Asking For It"

The Bluesfest lineup was released yesterday which reminded me of when I saw Hole a couple years ago at the same festival. The memory of seeing Hole then reminded me of high school which gave me an idea for a little personal project. I've been thinking lately about how different I am, and how everyone else is, than we were as teenagers. Now that h.s. seems far enough away, I can reflect on what exactly happened in those 4 years that seem so blurry now.

So my idea is to make a timeline of my High School Career from gr. 9 to 12 with noted landmarks; points in time where ways of thinking shifted. It's insane how much people can change in this time, not just physically, but mentally...like a personality evolution. Making a timeline could be really theraputic and could uncover forgotten thoughts or feelings towards events in memories. So far, I've put down events I remember like new friends, discovering of new music, trips with family etc. and then my feelings I remember having at those times. It's weird thinking about my own feelings from the past that seem like they're from the mind of someone else.

Sister Corita Kent//Visual Artist

"I think that there are a lot of people who make beautiful things that are just not noticed." Corita Kent is nun turned visual artist who worked principally using silkscreen. Her work focused on "messages of love and peace," and was popular during "...the social upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s." What a lovely lady!

Style Inspiration: Sandy's Little Brother

Last weekend I was reminded of the style niche of "90s bully,"* when something happened to me and my sister that led us to think of a similarly unsophisticated way to describe our own fashion identity.

Dressed in black hoodies, jean jackets, windbreakers, toques and Vans, me and Moodle were mistaken for "Sandy's little brother" last Saturday night by a bunch of guys passing us by in their car.  Not exactly sure 1) who Sandy is, 2) who would name their kid Sandy nowadays, and 3) which one of us "hey, are you Sandy's little brother" was directed at. Unfortunately we were too amazed to quip back something like; "noooo, seeing as we're GIRLS" or "yea we are him!"

Anyhow, this sparked the idea that from now on, our style icon is Sandy's Little Brother. Moodle was then inspired to let me cut her hair so she could always be mistaken for Sandy's lil bro. On the bottom right is Moodle's new hair, along with her fave little brothers (clockwise from her): Wiley Wiggums in Dazed & Confused, Stacey Peralta, Mitch from Honey I Shrunk Ourselves, JFD aka Sam Weir in Freaks n Geeks, and Tony Hawk.

citrus obsession//Pomelo

Citrus is the most beautiful food. The colours of pink and red and orange can only be described aptly by referring to the name of the type of citrus it comes from. These little drops of colour create a pattern that looks like a stained glass mosaic. Sliced horizontally, a citrus fruit is like a miniature Rose Window in gothic cathedrals.

This photo below is a chunk of pomelo. If you've never had pomelo, you should today. Imagine a giant grapefruit that doesn't taste at all bitter and has an awesome slightly crunchy texture. This fruit has gained notoriety on the cover of Toro Y Moi's Underneath the Pine that shows a pair of super wet lips macking on a pomelo. Yum.*

Tip: don't look up this album cover before trying pomelo; those lips and moustache make the fruit look a bit gnarly.

"1979"- The Smashing Pumpkins//Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris

YOOoo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris directed "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins! Can you see the similarities between this and the "Milky Way" ad? They're so good at these beautiful nostalgic car scenes.

The song 1979 itself has the same wistful sound as Pink Moon by Nick Drake. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are able to externalize the feelings of these songs visually. I think it would be cool to make a mix tape inspired by the word "wistful," since I seem to be drawn to any song that has this feeling..

"Pink Moon" Nick Drake

Pink Moon digital collage (2012) | Milky Way (1999)

Summer feelings! This VW car commercial is surprisingly creative and inspiring for being a car commercial. A lot of its vibe comes from the Nick Drake soundtrack, but the moonlighting and the feeling of driving around at night compliments the song well. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who brought you Little Miss Sunshine and music videos for bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, directed Milky Way. These two are a good example of how advertising can express creativity and can be a vehicle to share art with a huge number of people.
