If I were a boy...

...this is how I'd dress for prom.

[70s Mick Jagger wearing the nicest blue and white striped shirt | boys with impeccable taste in shirt/tie combos and mussed hair via I love fake magazine in 2, 3, & 6 | the Strokes in 4 & 5 are well dressed but not in clothes they're not afraid to get dirty or wet (hello jumping in the pool). Good thinking boys.]

I thought Jamie T.'s If I Were a Boy cover would be quite appropriate at this point.

princess leia the morning after

I love this beautiful prom-worthy braid from Nylon- it would be nice half-up as well so that it's like a crown. Also, this girl's eyeshadow looks like she smeared dandelions on her eyes and it rules. Whoever declared those pretty yellow flowers a weed is a lame-o who obviously has never sat in a field of them on a sunny day before.

Hazey Jane II

"It shouldn't be possible to make a song this catchy..."

I think I've just found my 1st summer anthem in Nick Drake's Hazy Jane II.

Beautiful glitter at Vivienne Westwood makes me think of the sparkling 80s synths of Montreal based Miracle Fortress.

d.i.y. chai

Here's a relatively foolproof recipe for a quick chai latte. I'm personally not into spending tons of money on food and I find this chai beverage just as satisfying as one that would cost me $5. I like using real tea rather than that too sweet flavoured syrup that many fast food places use to give it their 'signature taste.' You can also try this drink with black tea and just add cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon.

1. Fill mug halfway with milk, microwave for 1 min...then froth it with a whipper or small whisk.

2. Take a chai tea bag and smush it to the bottom with a spoon.

3. Boil some water and pour to fill mug, then let it steep for 5.

4. Add sugar and cinnamon to your personal preferences. Yay!

whimsical lifestyle

Summer: Makes me wanna watch Lost In Translation | Waking up to sun in through the blinds | Wearing t-shirts and not feeling guilty about being uncreative about my outfit | Drinking Elderflower soda. Daydreaming today about how fun it would be to go on a bike trip through Sweden. Biked home and made granola at lunchtime. Received my Monki magazine in the mail! Such a happy day..in a mood where I wouldn't even be surprised by a double rainbow cross da sky because I'd be expecting it.

illustrator Frank Hoehne

Frank Hoehne's illustration style rules-  filled with busy, crude expressive doodles and frantic typography that I can't help but feel overwhelmed in where to look first. Hoehne's illustrations recall my personal debate on the value of text in artwork- does it blatantly convey the themes of a literal artist or does it emphasize messages within works just by being text? The times that I have used text in illustration, I found myself getting irritated when the viewer attempted to read aloud every word, most of which I didn't necessarily intend to be read.

This makes me think of the argument that nothing in art is accidental, but I think the viewer of art has almost as much power as the artist, in the sense that they can take whatever they want out of any given work. When you put text into art, it then becomes a visual language, not necessarily literal, meaning what the letters spell out cannot be interpreted purely by what it says.

I find it a bit ironic with the 1st image of Hoehne's work below how the text is in German (which I don't understand), leading me to interpret the ideas not as text and images separately, but as visual equals.

His work for Brigitte | Hoehne's Berlin apartment/studio which I am verrrry jealous of. Look at that gallery on his wall!

70s swag

[imgs via google, the fashion spot, vogue, life]

Feeling good with golden hued shirts, flared jeans, zig-zag printed knitwear, and long, lovely locks on boys. Julian Casablancas is lookin fine with that sweater vest and really should wear one more often. Heck, everyone should wear a sweater vest more often- I feel like it would improve everyone's morale, even just by the novelty of everyone wearing a sweater vest. Also, happy Cinco de Mayo! I hope you eat fish tacos, drink Horchata, and listen to Cinco de Mayo by Liz Phair.

It Ain't Gonna Save Me

This song has been on constant repeat in my mind today. Walking to school, watching presentations, eating my applesauce, more presentations, yep, always in my head. I heard about Jay Reatard when I read Deerhunter's darkly fascinating Halcyon Digest cd pamphlet that revealed he was the inspiration for one of their songs.  "Where Do You Go When You Sleep" is about Jay's death from cocaine poisoning while sleeping in January 2010. I'm actually surprised I hadn't heard about him before, seeing as he's the Garage Rock King. He has this sweet faux-british accent like that of Garage Rock Pope Rob Pollard of Guided By Voices. I'm thinking if I want any success in the Garage Rock industry I'll need to start seriously considering said vocal affectation.

True Brit Jamie T.'s video for "Sticks and Stones" reminds me a lot of this one; featuring clowns, smoke, rebellion, and an uptempo 'runnin with believaaahs' beat.
