Beck- "Sexxlaws" + Autumn de Wilde

Jack Black is in this...and so are a fridge and a stove getting it on. Everything I could want from a Beck music video.

Autumn de Wild's photography book on Beck is awesome, and also very pink. Below are a few images from the book. For more of her work, here's her tumblr.

Nxne recap// Matthew Good Band "Load Me Up"

Vague NXNE recap in the form of "what's in a NXNE volunteers' bag?' photos (via Static Zine) and the video for Matt Good Band's Load Me Up, who played Yonge & Dundas square last Friday night.

On the Saturday that we envisioned ourselves at the Radiohead show, we entered an alternate reality where nothing we expected of that night actually happened. Upon exiting the subway after doing a 180 when we heard the show was cancelled, we sat at a circular park bench, watched a guy on the street balance a glass orb, and eventually ended up eating some awesome Portuguese BBQ. On top of all that, we were then able to see the Flaming Lips; an awesome alternative when you consider what we would have done otherwise (cried ourselves to sleep).

The height of the evening took place during the performance of Do You Realize?? when the women that my mom and aunt befriended started dog dancing with their chihuahua. Simultaneously, guy in front of us was excaiming about all the beer he just spilled on his crotch. Despite the distractions of moving bikini billboards, ads for shitty zombie movies, and hairy shirtless men that make up Y&D square, Wayne Coyne's enormous fake hands that shot out lasers were still the centre of attention.

Love Story by Florian Habicht

I'm still sad that Hot Docs (Toronto doc film fest) is over, even though it ended basically a month ago. Watching documentaries just feels so good! There's something about watching live, unscripted action that makes a film extremely involving. It's like breaking down the third wall of most scripted movies to show truly relatable human emotion.

The film we saw on the 2nd last night of Hot Docs was a movie/doc hybrid Love Story. Its creator Florian Habicht intertwines footage of New Yorkers giving him their take on life and love along with their suggested romantic scenarios, played out by himself and "Masha." Take a look at the trailer and one of my favourite scenes from Love Story to get a better picture of the structure.

Love Story's cinematography is beautiful and the lighting throughout makes you want to live in New York during the summertime. Even though it's a quasi-documentary, the wardrobe choices were perfect in helping create a 'summertime in the city' vibe, like Florian's pants are always a flashy pastel (so perfect when he goes to the Coney Island boardwalk), or Masha's orange silk dress. New Yorkers that were filmed each had a unique, confident style that added their "character." Even though this footage is from "Real Life," it seemed like they were characters, like in the scene I linked above, Libra's tight white ensemble seems to fit perfect with her sanguine, vivacious personality.
