Sellout

Daria*, I honestly doubt you are going to be skateboarding with those stilettos...and won't your croc-skin bag weigh you down or make you tip? What about that pristine white dress that probably costs more than a month's rent? Terry Richardson's flash photography and trendy use of skateboard culture may make some swoon, but this new Celine ad makes me seriously skeptical.

[Celine SS 2011 campaign smackdown vs. Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times At Ridgemont High . I'd place my bets on Mr. Spicoli]

California beach culture has always been something that kids not from LA daydream about, but this ideal of "cool" has recently resurfaced in hipster culture as a major mainstream trend. Gaining momentum with the help of lo-fi surf rock bands and Proenza Schouler's spring 2010 collection made up of neo-boho  surf gear, tie-dye, and salty colored hair. Celine as a brand has never been "trendy" up until Phoebe Philo took over last year, but the fact that it now has an "it-bag" to its name does not make it any less elitist or fussy. Basically what I'm trying to say is that no Jeff Spicoli (Fast Times At Ridgemont High) will be choosing to blow their salary on this "investment piece." And I know that women who buy Celine will not be seen cruising down Rodeo Drive on a banana board in the wake of this advertisement.
