Gardens & villa pt. 3
Hey it's Tuesday. I'm drinking 2% milk. Looking out the window thinking how warm it looks outside. Contrasting with our jumping the gun (in the best way possible) on a Christmas tree. I'd rather extend the holiday season before Christmas rather than keeping a tree up for months after. It's more inspirational and less depressing, which is always a nice. Hey, I'm noticing a parallel between this post and my last gardens and villa post where I featured "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead...our tree is fake and plastic..it's come full circle.
Oh, and I bought a giant piece of card stock at the $store yesterday and plan to doodle all over it in ballpoint pen. That's all.
Psyche! Here are some pictures I took at Allan Gardens a couple weeks ago..imagine if this were your house..
It's a breezy beautiful day, the air is cool and there are plenty of things to do

Halloween\\Lisa Rowe
Today's Halloween costume post features the scariest non-zombie movie villain since Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrence in the Shining. Lisa Rowe, "charming sociopath," played by Angelina Jolie from Girl, Interrupted, is the perfect obscure film reference costume for those of you who, like me, still want to portray someone scary for Halloween. The climax scene of the film had me genuinely terrified, even more than the Carrie finale in fact. Watching Lisa stalk Joanna (Winona Rider) through the basement corridors of that freaky mental hospital, making these aweful echo-y yells had me figuratively peeing my pants.
To achieve the Lisa Rowe "original heroine-chic" look, this is what it's going to take: 1. ratty old thrift store t-shirt- marigold yellow is ideal. You can even make a 'US ARMY' stencil diy or something if you, like me, are super into this idea. 2. Monochrome makeup featuring Wendy Torrence-esque eye contours and sallow complexion. Don't forget to pout your lips, apply concealer, then apply some reddish colour to the inner part of your lip- PERFECTLY CHAPPED. 3. 70s swagger details like flare chords (ratty sweats work as well), sunglasses, shaggy fur jacket, whatever. 4. Finishing touches: medical bracelets, tangled hair, and some needle marks and bruises that make the ideal junkie arms. Voila. You'll have everyone saying "That's a scary mask bro."

Halloween\\Carrie White
Who out there has an overwhelming urge to press stop while watching Carrie when she's on the stage, smiling, loving life with prom king Tommy Ross by her side? We all know what's going to happen, that happened over 20 years ago, even longer ago when the story was 1st concieved in Stephen King's twisted mind, (also a mind that thinks Carrie was a better movie than the Shining..delusional.), BUT we all keep wanting to believe that it won't happen. It's like in the Virgin Suicides: both in reading the book and watching the movie, you always want to believe things will end differently..exactly the thought process of that group of boys in the story.
Anyhow. Despite being utterly disappointed every time watching this movie, I still can't bring myself to actually press stop on the remote, forcing myself to watch in horror as Carrie White, prom queen, turns into satan reincarnated. Those eyyyyes. God. But the scariest part of Carrie is the overwhelming sense of frustration I feel as I watch something I know will happen, happen, and there's absolutely nothing I can do. For those of you about to watch this, (it's a classic piece of pop-culture, dooo it) Carrie gets slimed, hate to break it to you.

Halloween\\Wendy Torrence
Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrence from the Shining: you can go for her fashionable, put together 70s look before her husband goes crazy and tries to murder her (if you're the fashion-costume type) or when she's running around flailing a knife/baseball bat. Key components to either side of Wendy are: turtleneck sweater, plaid layering, and a shortish/longish black wig. Post "all work and no play" Mrs. Torrence needs a housecoat, toy knife (emphasis on TOY), and major undereye circles (empasis on MAJOR).

Spring-spiration!
1. Cat-eye sunglasses! (Chloe) 2. Pastel Streaked Hair (Giles) 3. Sailor Striped Slouch Sweater (Vince) 4. Gladiators w/ a Twist (Loeffler Randall) 5. Summer entertainment! (the new i-D magazine, cds: Albert Hammond Jr. & Hole). 6. Hunter Wellies for music festivals! (Hunter) 7. Easy Fit Boyfriend Shorts (R13) 8. The Alexander Wang "Brenda" Bag of course :P 9. The Nars Multiple for a monochrome look. 10. RINGS! (All from ZOE online boutique).
Spring! (sorry for the silly title...) Even though spring is in full swing, it's never to late to elaborate on what my Spring Must Haves are. I was really inspired by yyellowbird's photos on Flickr, like the one in the collage above- for some reason, just soo inspiring. Although I do not live in Cali, I would love to dress like I do. Hunter wellies are ideal for the Coachella Valley music festival & abundant spring showers. Slouchy basics are a great start for spring because one can gradually add on more "statement" or "trendy" pieces as the season goes on (not to mention accessories!). It's just such an inspiring season for everything either new or newly discovered (music, magazines, photography, etc.) not to mention the beautiful muggy weather, and that's what makes it my fave season.

Biking
Jessica Stam (blondie), Yasmin Sewell (brunette), & chic friends biking in Paris! How much more fashionable could this get? Maybe if one of these cyclists were wearing some colors...(seriously, it's spring!) Biker chic is fine for motorcycles, but this is BICYCLE chic, which should involve florals, chambray, and smiles!
I'm really loving the big wire baskets on the front of those rent-a-bikes. The Chanel and Dior bags transform them into high end bike accessories.

Cats!
[Ali Michael with kitty in Lula magazine: spring 2010]
Not sure whether or not you caught the Aftershow on MTV Canada last thursday, but Dan & Jesse were totally dissing cats. "They put their claws in your clothes, they hiss, and they eat their food then walk away!" Hm, and so do dogs...but let's not get into it now, because I just wanted to bring to surface the fact that cats are SO this season.
Miuccia Prada would agree with me, seeing as, along with sparrows and flowers (and yes, dogs too...), cats were the main affair with the Miu Miu s/s '10 collection. I went crazy over the clutch and mary janes- both heeled and flat: being a crazy cat girl, this is the most perfect print ever.
Lula magazine, Grace Coddington and Tom Jones all concur that cats are in fashion. Emulate Minou with black and white, liquid eyeliner, and cat eye sunglasses.

Violet
I'm so hip, experimenting with found object photography and listening to Courtney Love...but seriously, I feel like these images epitomize my march break. I'm really into light, airy, cool toned photography & tried to emulate that during my week of free time. I was also totally inspired by the "Live Through This" Hole album, music wise, but also by the artistic mood created in the album art and videos.
Dirty grunge paired with red lipstick, platinum dye jobs, and lots of glitter (no, not like Ke$ha) show 90s fashion's best side. Don't rule out the music right away- listen to Miss World more than once. The best songs are those that have to grow on you.

Anna Sui Sunshine
So much for spring, summer's here! 30 degrees celsius is alright with me- time for orange & yellow sundresses!
Anna Sui s/s '10 is right on the dot for this season. Seriously, if you're going to do a spring summer collection, then seriously commit to a spring summer collection. I know, I know, it's in the eye of the beholder, but I'm just super inspired by Anna Sui's seventies sunshine girl looks-not to mention the smiles and bright eyes of the models.
Happy Easter!

Movie Inspiration: Uptown Girls
In the honor of my minty fresh header and newfound love for Polyvore.com, I only see it fit to share this collage with you all! Brittany Murphy (a rock star's daughter), and Dakota Fanning (a prep school ballerina) meet to create a really unique style. I dedicate this collage to Brittany. I can't believe I've waited so long to blog about the fashion from Uptown Girls: I saw it last May! Although the movie isn't 100% my taste, the whole feel and look of the movie is really whimsical and sweet (not to mention the music's AH-mazing!... :/ )

Raw Strawberry Pie à la Jónsi & Alex
Jonsi & Alex! The boys have created a free cookbook with delicious (raw) recipes! Since Sigur Ros is one of my favorite bands, I wanted to check out Jonsi's new project with Alex; including their website jonsiandalex.com, they also have an album of atmospheric music entitled "Riceboy Sleeps." As if this wasn't enough to tackle, they also make art, which is viewable on the site. Look out for Jonsi's solo album coming out in March & keep updated through his twitter!
Now, about the video: I've read Sarma Melngailis's (founder of Pure Food & Wine in NYC) "Living Raw" book and wasn't that inspired to make the recipes from the book. Green algae, cocao powder, and the pain of dehydrating kind of turned me off of making raw food. Salads and other foods that are meant to be raw, such as gazpacho are still do-able for me, but I'm not going to become a "raw-foodist" any time soon (heck, even Sarma herself doesn't categorize herself). Thankfully Jonsi & Alex have created some easy, healthy, raw recipes that aren't such a pain in the butt and time consuming:check out the pdf of their Healthy Heart cookbook at their site!
This tutorial features the Jonsi & Alex making a surprisingly easy raw vegan strawberry pie. Finally inspired by raw again!

Sonia Rykiel...once again
How is it that Aritzia. always knows the best designers to take influence from? 1st it was Rodarte, now Sonia Rykiel, my fave Canadian retailer is always spot on with haute references.
Even though it's from 2 years ago, this design remains perfect in every way. This sweater has all of the most gorgeous colors ever smooshed into one lovely drapey-drop shoulder knit. Kudos: a perfect opportunity for Runway//Realway!
