Kurt Cobain: About a Son is the best doc on Kurt I've ever seen and is one of my favorite films. Breathtaking footage set to a great soundtrack and Cobain's gravelly slacker voice saying everything you've felt before so eloquently. Much better than those doc channel half-hour ones that show one childhood photo of Kurt in Ken Burns effect repeatedly.

Pretty Nice Hair Cut

Having the guts to cut ones' hair drastically is a characteristic I greatly commend. Oh my god I don't think my mind can switch back and forth between english class and real life anymore, but I guess they're basically the same, so whatever. You don't care, I don't care, cut your hair.

I currently have an "un-haircut" kind of like Kurt..like I cut it myself- it's easier since I have super straight hair so I just usually go for a blunt cut. Sometimes I go to the bathroom and take jabs at the ends in attempts to create a nice shag effect...I'm still in the learning process. It'd be super sweet to one day go as short as above but maybe not yet.

I can imagine this eventually. Like when I don't need a teenage security blanket in the form of long hair HAH.

Or, more realistically, this, except sans bangs...tried them out in grades 7 through 9 until I realized my forehead isn't big enough to accommodate blunt bangs. We'll just have to wait and see where my next great hair cut adventure takes me next I guess. Hopefully I won't end up having to go to a salon wherein the hairdresser might use his/her magical skills to turn me into a gorilla (see Pavement- Cut Your Hair).*

* Although I would love the ability to sneeze cats..

More Moleskine

So I'm going to let you know that this post is not about fashion. I'm not really in a fashion mindset lately and even with the amazing fall clothes coming out, they remind me that S*** is starting up again eventually. I  just love summer SO MUCH that it's painful to think of fall. I just don't like it. I feel in the mood to gush some more about deep and meaningful philosophies that will affect the way you live for the rest of your life. Is that ok?

I can't stop staring at these pictures. I love having them curated in my moleskine- they fit together so well in my opinion. Each one helps define a certain feeling that I loosely label 'contemplation' but is definitely more. The characters in the movies shown are all quietly fighting with themselves and just thinking..and so is Kurt Cobain, come to think of it. You know how Will Ferell in Elf says that 'smiling's my favourite!'? Well thinking's my favorite. I'm totally a supporter of alone time to collect thoughts n stuff.  I just feel a surge of empathy for these people when I see this collection of moments. Fuzzy lights, cluttered homes, lit up faces, and Strawberry Quik (see cobain) are so attractive. Watch these movies please.

Punk Rock Means Freedom

My 1st actual d.i.y. post! My sister was internet window shopping when she discovered a pair of converse that are a collaboration with Kurt Cobain (re-issue I guess..). Ordering online in Canada is a huge ordeal- everything costs at least 50 bucks more than an American would pay- it's just not usually worth it. When she was all bummed out, I suggested that I re-create them on her prized black low-tops...and that's the beautiful tale of how these shoes came to be. It took a while to replicate Kurt's printing, but luckily he's not the most meticulous penman evar. I think they turned out pretty swell, don't you?

Kool Aid AND Kurt Cobain

I wonder if Kurt Cobain would have ever thought that his personal style would influence the world of fashion, more than ten years post (Giles (middle) & Proenza Schouler (bottom right) s/s '10 anyone?). How can someone who cares so little about 'the World of Fashion' become inspiration for so many people who make their living off of it? Plaid shirts, doc martens, jeans: boyfriend style & jackets, & oversize sweaters have become a M.O.D.* staple, but really, all Kurt was trying to do was to self-consciously cover up his body.

The next step in grunge that has come (almost) mainstream is cotton candy hair. Hair that was once dyed with a household substance like bleach or Kool Aid, has grown out and faded to a dull, beachy mass. I'm totally into it.

What keeps this look in true Cobain spirit is if you keep this look totally, genuinely low maintenance. I confess, Bumble & Bumble surf spray is beneficial to the straight texture of my hair (which can never be naturally beachy), but this does not replace a day at the beach; drying your salt soaked hair in the sun. Think grunge surfer (& add some sideways egg glasses).

Try it out- Kool Aid fades out after a few rinses anyways...that is if you wash your hair...
